DumDum Maths
Year 1 · ages 5-6

Everything Year 1 learns, on one page.

All 191 skills, in the order a UK primary teaches them. Tap any one for its own page: what your child actually does, and the real question.

Core — a statutory requirement of the National Curriculum Stretch — ready for more 191 playable right now
1

Place value within 10

Autumn term · 25 skills

The longest block of the year, and deliberately so: everything Reception did with objects, now also written down as numerals and words.

2

Addition and subtraction within 10

Autumn term · 22 skills

The first symbols. A child who has been putting counters together all year now sees it written as 3 + 4 = 7 — with the counters still there underneath, never instead.

3

Shape

Autumn term · 17 skills

Naming shapes, and noticing what makes them that shape. Solid shapes first, because a child can hold one.

4

Place value within 20

Spring term · 17 skills

Past ten, where the words stop helping — eleven and twelve say nothing about ten. The frame comes in pairs from here.

5

Addition and subtraction within 20

Spring term · 16 skills

The centrepiece of the year. Bonds to 20, doubles, and the hardest idea in Key Stage 1: that subtraction is sometimes a difference rather than a taking away.

6

Place value within 50

Spring term · 13 skills

Tens and ones, with base ten blocks. The first time a child sees that a two-digit number is made of two different things.

7

Length and height

Spring term · 7 skills

Compare first, then measure with something, then measure with a ruler — in that order, because a ruler means nothing until you have measured with cubes.

8

Mass and volume

Spring term · 8 skills

Heavier and lighter on a balance; fuller and emptier in a jug. Both are compared long before either is measured.

9

Equal groups

Summer term · 16 skills

Year 1 has no times tables. Multiplication here is equal groups, arrays and doubling, done with objects — which is exactly what the statutory wording asks for.

10

Halves and quarters

Summer term · 8 skills

A half is one of two equal parts — of a shape, or of a group. The word "equal" is the whole lesson.

11

Position and direction

Summer term · 7 skills

Where a thing is, and how far it has turned. Quarter turns here are the same quarters as in fractions, on purpose.

12

Place value within 100

Summer term · 14 skills

The fourth and last time place value is taught this year. By now tens and ones should feel obvious, which is the point of teaching it four times.

13

Money

Summer term · 10 skills

Recognising coins and knowing what each one is worth. A 2p is bigger than a 5p, which is the first time size and value disagree.

14

Time

Summer term · 11 skills

The language of time before the clock, and then o'clock and half past — which are the only two times Year 1 has to read.
