1

Place value to 100

Autumn term · 28 skills

Tens and ones, on base ten blocks and in a place value chart. By the end of this block a two-digit number is two things, not one.

2

Addition and subtraction

Autumn term · 30 skills

The four two-digit cases the National Curriculum names, one at a time, with bridging through ten as the strategy underneath all of them.

3

Shape

Autumn term · 20 skills

Not just naming now: counting sides, edges, faces and vertices, finding a line of symmetry, and spotting a flat shape on the surface of a solid.

4

Money

Spring term · 22 skills

Real coins, in real amounts. The hard idea is that the same amount can be made several ways, and that change is a subtraction you can see.

5

Multiplication and division

Spring term · 32 skills

The first times tables — and there are three of them: 2, 5 and 10. Everything is an array or a set of equal groups first, and a fact second.

6

Length and height

Spring term · 12 skills

Standard units arrive: centimetres and metres, and knowing which one to reach for is half the skill.

7

Mass, capacity and temperature

Spring term · 16 skills

Grams and kilograms, millilitres and litres, degrees Celsius. Three scales to read, all of them with numbers between the marks.

8

Fractions

Summer term · 22 skills

Halves, thirds and quarters — of a shape, a length, a set and a number. Thirds are new, and so is writing a fraction down.

9

Time

Summer term · 20 skills

Quarter past, quarter to, then every five minutes. Quarter to is the hard one, because the hour hand has already moved on.

10

Statistics

Summer term · 14 skills

New this year: reading and making tally charts, pictograms, block diagrams and tables — and answering a question with them.

11

Position and direction

Summer term · 12 skills

Turns become right angles, and get a direction: clockwise or anti-clockwise.
